First Kiss by Ivy Sinclair

Where My Heart Breaks Cover by Ivy Sinclair
There is nothing quite like a first kiss.

It doesn’t matter if it’s your first kiss ever (do you remember yours?) or the first kiss with the guy who currently fills your dreams and makes you feel all mushy inside. There is something magical in those first few moments when your lips touch, and it becomes clear that- hello- there’s something pretty awesome going on here.

As a romance writer, I’m almost more concerned about properly depicting my couple’s first kiss than their first sexual encounter. There are an abundance of emotions that go into that moment, and it’s the very first turning point in the relationship. Once that line is crossed, it’s hard to consider going backwards. That kiss should light the fire that can only push us faster and further toward that next pinnacle.

As readers, although we are rooting for that moment to arrive, we can be as uncertain about what it means as the characters are. It might be pasts that have to be overcome, or the situation isn’t favorable to them being together, but once they’re drawn together you feel like it will all be all right. Something is being built that cannot be denied.

It all starts with that kiss.

I play with which character kisses the other first. I can be a little old-fashioned sometimes and so I let the Hero take the lead. Usually he’s wrestled with his emotions to the point that he’s a little crazy, and he doesn’t have the strength to keep his desires at bay any longer. So his kiss is hard and commanding. There is no tentative ask for permission. He consumes and ravages the lips of the one he desires, even as he is being consumed himself.

It is different when I let my heroine take control. She is going to be looking for any sign from the hero that she shouldn’t do what she’s about to do. She’ll use her eyes and her body to ask the question, and she’ll be bold in her pursuit when she notices the hitch of his breath or the other, must more visible signs, of his desire for her.

Either way though, that kiss holds the promise of everything that comes next and cranks up our expectations of where the relationship is about to go. Perhaps that’s why I get so cranky when I read a story where the hero/heroine kisses someone else (for whatever reason) during the course of the story. It strikes a chord of dissonance that makes me anxious and sometimes even angry.

In stories you read, just like in real life, you want that first kiss to be perfect. It draws us in like a moth to the flame, and then sets us on the rollercoaster of everything yet to come.

  I love that first kiss.
